Sarah Abedi, MD
is a board certified emergency medicine physician, speaker, and educator, dedicated to exploring optimal human health through the intersection of evidence-based medicine, consciousness, and the interconnected nature of our challenges.
Education
Dr. Abedi earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, and her Medical Doctorate from the University of California, Irvine. She completed her residency in emergency medicine at Harbor UCLA, a level one trauma center, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. This experience highlighted the need for preventative medicine as she witnessed many patients with complex chronic conditions exacerbated by the virus. Post-residency, Dr. Abedi pursued further training in integrative medicine modalities, earning a certification from the California Institute of Integral Studies in Psychedelics Treatment and Research Program, as well as Integrative Psychiatry Institute’s ketamine provider training. She has interviewed leading academics and physicians globally on her podcast The Hidden Body, delving into the complex ecosystem of human health and striving for optimal well-being beyond mere disease prevention.
Research
Dr. Abedi has contributed to clinical trials at the Pacific Neuroscience Institute as a psychedelic facilitator, studying the effects of psilocybin and LSD on mental health disorders. She is set to join the USC Center for Mindfulness Science as a psychedelic facilitator for a psilocybin trial investigating the role of mindfulness practices.
Speaking
She has spoken nationally at prestigious conferences such as Concordia whose speakers also included First Lady Jill Biden, Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Sir Tony Blair.
Clinical
She works part time with patients to optimize overall health by addressing the interconnectedness of the body's systems. She explores various factors including brain health, gut health, sleep health, immune health, and mental health, recognizing that imbalances in one area can affect others. By combining conventional medicine with evidence-based integrative practices, such as nutrition, lifestyle modifications, and stress management techniques, she creates tailored comprehensive treatment plans that not only target specific health issues but also promote overall well-being and resilience.
Policy
Dr. Abedi has worked on policy change to expand funding to mental health research, engaging with numerous policymakers at both state and federal levels regarding the science behind psychedelic medicine. She served as the Chief Medical Officer and Deputy Campaign Manager for TREAT California, a groundbreaking citizen drive ballot initiative aimed at establishing a $5B funding agency to explore novel therapeutics, including psychedelic medicine. This initiative united a diverse coalition of scientists, doctors, lawyers, Navy SEALs, military generals, union leaders, first responders, and elected officials with the shared goal of advancing mental health research in psychedelic medicine. Currently, Sarah is the Chief Medical Officer of TREAT Humanity, an organization dedicated to continuing the advancement of innovative therapeutics in the healthcare sector.
